Manoel Island

Manoel Island offers harbour views and a quieter perspective on Gżira and Valletta, with fortifications and quarantine buildings that explain how Malta managed both defence and arriving ships.

Manoel Island

Why go

The island sits between the urban shores of Marsamxett Harbour, so its value begins with the contrast in viewpoints across the water. Fort Manoel and the lazaretto represent two different responses to the same maritime setting: protecting the harbour and controlling disease brought by ships. Read their outlines as part of that shared geography.

What to look for

  • Fort Manoel has an eighteenth-century defensive outline.
  • The former lazaretto stands beside Lazzaretto Creek.
  • Valletta and Sliema face the island across Marsamxett Harbour.

The full story

Before Fort Manoel gave the island its present name, it belonged to the bishop of Malta and was known as Bishop’s Island. Its separation from the main shore made it useful for quarantine: an early hospital appeared after a plague outbreak, followed by a more permanent lazaretto in the seventeenth century. Passengers and goods arriving by sea could be held away from the busy towns while the authorities assessed the risk of infection. The Order of St John later added a star-shaped fort, built under Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena in the eighteenth century. Defence and quarantine used the same small piece of land for different purposes. From the surrounding harbour, the military walls and long hospital frontage help make that distinction visible. The island’s history belongs as much to everyday maritime controls as to battles and military engineering.

Useful to know

  • Check current land access before crossing from Gżira.
  • Treat a foreshore walk and entry to Fort Manoel as separate visits.
  • Use the island with Sliema’s promenade for two views of the same harbour.
