Mdina

Mdina offers a compact walk inside Malta's former capital, where medieval streets meet Baroque architecture. Pair it with neighbouring Rabat for a broader picture than the walls alone provide.

Mdina

Why go

The enclosed streets make the change from Malta's harbour cities immediately clear. Here, the attraction is an inland capital whose old street pattern survived later architectural renewal. Look at how formal Baroque buildings fit into the older city, then continue into Rabat to understand what lies beyond the fortified core.

What to look for

  • The fortified walls still define the limits of the historic city.
  • Medieval street patterns survive alongside Norman and Baroque architecture.
  • Rabat directly adjoins the former capital outside its walls.

The full story

Present-day Mdina occupies only part of a much older settlement. Phoenician Maleth became Roman Melite, a city larger than the enclosed core you see today. Its reduction under later Byzantine or Arab rule helps explain why the neighbouring town of Rabat belongs to the same historical landscape. The name Mdina comes from the Arabic word medina, while Rabat means suburb. Mdina remained Malta's capital through the Middle Ages. When the Order of St John arrived in 1530, it chose Birgu as its administrative centre, shifting power towards the harbour. Mdina retained its importance to noble families and religious authorities, but its national role diminished. An early eighteenth-century revival added Baroque features without erasing the medieval character. That combination gives the walk its interest: an old capital adapted over time, rather than a city built in one architectural campaign.

Useful to know

  • Combine the walled-city walk with Rabat rather than planning two separate journeys.
  • Leave room for wandering the narrow streets before adding individual interiors.
