Victoria, Gozo

Gozo's main town combines the raised Cittadella with streets below it. Visit for fortifications, island history and a cathedral whose painted ceiling rewards a closer look inside.

Victoria, Gozo

Why go

Victoria gathers several strands of Gozo into one stop. The Cittadella gives the town a strong defensive outline, while its cathedral and museums add architecture and historical detail within the walls. Below, the older town is a useful counterpoint to the fortress, so the visit need not end at the ramparts.

What to look for

  • The Cittadella’s massive walls rise above the town.
  • The cathedral ceiling paints the illusion of a dome that was never built.
  • Gozo museums occupy the historic citadel setting.

The full story

Victoria and Rabat are two names for the same Gozitan town. The British government gave it the name Victoria in 1887 for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, but Rabat remains in use for its old centre. The citadel above it has a much longer history. Earlier fortifications developed into a stronghold whose northern side retains an Aragonese layer, while the Knights rebuilt the southern flank after the devastating Ottoman attack of 1551. The walls were intended to protect island communities from raids and enslavement, which gives their size a practical meaning beyond the view. Inside stands the Baroque cathedral designed by Lorenzo Gafà, also the architect of Mdina's cathedral. Its painted dome is an illusion rather than a built structure. Looking up reveals how painting could complete an architectural ambition that the building itself did not fulfil.

Useful to know

  • Combine the town below with the Cittadella instead of limiting the visit to its walls.
  • Select citadel museums individually so their interiors do not crowd out the town walk.
