Żejtun

Żejtun is a historic southeastern town for narrow old streets, parish architecture and small chapels. It adds an inland neighbourhood perspective to a day focused on Malta's southern harbours.

Żejtun

Why go

The older cores of Bisqallin and Ħal Bisbut help explain how Żejtun grew from neighbouring villages into a larger town. St Catherine's Parish Church, St Gregory's Church and votive chapels give the walk specific anchors. The contrast between these older streets and later expansion is more revealing than treating the town as one monument.

What to look for

  • Bisqallin and Ħal Bisbut retain narrow streets and older village boundaries.
  • St Catherine’s Parish Church anchors the town’s religious heritage.
  • St Gregory’s Church and votive chapels add smaller architectural stops.

The full story

Żejtun's older village cores, Bisqallin and Ħal Bisbut, explain why the town does not read as a single planned centre. Their narrow streets and ancient boundaries survived as development spread around them. The parish is documented in 1436, placing its religious life well before the larger modern town. An older church was rebuilt in 1492, and the later parish church is only one part of a landscape that also includes St Gregory's Church and votive chapels. The title Città Beland dates to 1797, when Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch granted it. Roman villa remains add an earlier archaeological layer, although their existence does not establish public entry. These different layers make Żejtun worth reading on foot: village lanes, churches and later expansion each reveal a separate stage of growth rather than one uniform architectural period.

Useful to know

  • Focus the walk on the old village cores and named churches.
  • Combine Żejtun with Marsaxlokk for contrasting inland and fishing-harbour settings.
  • Check arrangements separately before planning to enter any church or archaeological remains.
