Why go
Use the geography to plan realistic days. Port Louis occupies a harbour setting, while the main island’s interior and coast offer different landscapes. Rodrigues lies roughly 560 km east, so its beaches, villages and routes belong in a separate island plan.
The full story
Mauritius and Rodrigues belong to the Mascarene island group, alongside Réunion. The main island is volcanic, with an interior plateau and a coast edged in many places by lagoons. This contrast matters on the ground: a trip inland feels different from time by the sea, even though both lie on the same island. Rodrigues is the country’s second largest island and sits about 560 km to the east. Agaléga is much farther north, and Saint Brandon is a group of small islets, shoals and sandbanks to the north-east. These outer islands should not be mistaken for ordinary extensions of a main-island itinerary. The dodo once lived on Mauritius and appears on the national coat of arms. Its extinction followed human settlement and the introduction of animals that threatened its ground nests. That history gives the island’s surviving wildlife more meaning than the dodo emblem alone conveys.
Useful to know
- Plan Rodrigues as a separate trip; do not put it into a main-island day route.
- Allow for different conditions between coastal stops and the higher interior.
