University of Melbourne Parkville Campus

The Parkville campus offers a walk through courtyards and university architecture north of the CBD, with Old Quad as the clearest historic anchor.

University of Melbourne Parkville Campus

Why go

This is an open-ended campus walk rather than a conventional attraction. Sandstone and brick buildings show different stages of the university’s growth, and the courtyards provide a calmer transition between Carlton and Parkville. Old Quad carries the strongest heritage interest, while newer buildings reveal how the institution has expanded around its original core. Teaching spaces are not automatically public.

What to look for

  • Enter Old Quad to see the cloistered sandstone courtyard.
  • Compare the historic core with later buildings and landscaped passages.

Useful to know

  • Keep to public paths and respect classes, ceremonies and restricted buildings.
  • Combine the campus with Carlton Gardens or Melbourne Museum.
