Yarra River

The Yarra is Melbourne’s central orientation line, linking the CBD, Southbank, gardens and sporting precinct through bridges and mostly level waterfront paths.

Yarra River

Why go

Walk a section to understand the city’s layout rather than trying to cover the whole river. Around Princes Bridge, the water separates the street grid from the arts precinct; farther east, paths lead toward gardens and the MCG. Bridges repeatedly reset the skyline view, while the river’s identity as Birrarung connects the modern city with enduring Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country.

What to look for

  • Compare the skyline from both banks near Princes Bridge.
  • Watch how rowing sheds, parkland and sports venues replace dense city frontage upstream.

Useful to know

  • Choose one bank for a continuous walk and use a bridge to return.
  • Check conditions after heavy rain and avoid low paths if water levels are high.
