At the Astor Court, a patterned opening frames a rock or a patch of garden. Start with one of those views before walking to three sculptures on Floor 2. In Gallery 208, Maitreya represents the Buddha expected in a future age. In 209, the seated monk Sengqie was revered as a form of Guanyin and associated with protection from floods. In Gallery 240, Shiva’s drum, flame and raised foot carry meanings within Hindu devotion. We’ll follow their hands, robes and poses while keeping those different religious histories clear. Begin at the Astor Court in Gallery 217. All four stops are on Floor 2, with time to walk between the collections.
