Move between near and far
The Harvesters has people close to you and activity farther into the landscape. Let your eye move between those scales. Find someone resting, someone working and a detail that takes a little longer to discover. Bruegel painted the scene for a series commissioned by a merchant, so the room in which it was first seen also belongs to its history.
Look at the paint itself
In Wheat Field with Cypresses, compare the marks in the field, the cypress trees and the sky. Short strokes bend across the wheat, while longer curves gather into clouds. Keep the viewing distance that allows you to see the marks comfortably, with the barriers and other visitors in mind.
Read, then look again
Choose one piece of information from the label or card and return to the painting. Can you now find the detail it describes? See whether it changes what you notice. Before moving on, choose the detail you would point out to someone beside you.
