Look at how far a figure reaches into the space around it. Canova’s Perseus with the Head of Medusa extends an arm and displays the head held in his hand. Carpeaux’s Ugolino and His Sons presses several bodies into a close, strained group. Both works are in Gallery 548. A sculpture can change as your viewing angle changes. Where visitor space allows, try a second position and notice a hand, a face or a support that was hidden from the first. Keep clear of the barriers and other visitors. The subjects include a severed head and a story of imprisonment and starvation, which may matter when choosing what to see with children. The individual cards explain the stories before you decide to spend longer with them.
