In Gallery 700, sculpture and architecture share a large court. Look for Diana, the slim gilt figure drawing her bow. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed her for the tower of an earlier Madison Square Garden. The outstretched limbs and bow had to be clear to people looking up from the street. This bronze was cast in 1928 at half the size of the second tower figure.
The court also provides a useful place to choose what comes next. Our American images tour begins with Diana before moving to paintings on Floor 2. The Oxbow is in Gallery 759, Heart of the Andes and Washington Crossing the Delaware share Gallery 760, and Madame X is in Gallery 771. Allow time for the change of floor and follow signs to the elevators if you prefer them.
