A temple stands indoors here. A bronze archer shares the museum with Van Gogh’s painted wheat, royal armor and the decorated walls of a reception room from Damascus. Choose a few of them to spend time with. There is plenty of walking between collections, and a small object can deserve as long a pause as a whole temple. The museum was incorporated in 1870 and opened on this Fifth Avenue site in 1880. The building grew around its first structure as the collections expanded. The columned facade and Great Hall came later, opening in 1902. As you walk, the broad courts give way to smaller galleries built during different additions to the museum. Start with the Great Hall as your reference point. The first-visit tour crosses several collections. Other tours stay with Egyptian objects, portraits, American paintings, Asian sculpture or the Islamic galleries. You can also choose a single room and open the works associated with it. This guide covers The Met Fifth Avenue. The Met Cloisters is a separate museum location farther north in Manhattan.
