The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing

Choose a region before you start looking closely. The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing brings together the arts of Africa, the ancient Americas and Oceania, with separate presentations that make their different histories easier to follow. The galleries reopened in May 2025 after a major reinstallation. For a first close look, find the Mangaaka Power Figure in Gallery 344. Its forward stance, hands on hips and inserted metal belong to a specific Kongo history of authority and agreements. The metal insertions recorded vows, agreements and disputes. Its story belongs to the Kongo community that used it. You can also let the room labels guide you toward another region. Keep track of the named community, material and purpose attached to each work. Choose one of those collections for a closer visit rather than trying to cover the whole wing at once.
