Why go
Start inside Bosque de Chapultepec, choosing either Chapultepec Castle or the National Museum of Anthropology as the principal interior; attempting both plus the zoo makes the day rushed. Continue along Paseo de la Reforma toward the Angel of Independence and Zona Rosa, then observe the Mexican Stock Exchange and the avenues extending south toward Insurgentes and the World Trade Center. The route moves from wooded royal and presidential ground into Mexico City's monumental nineteenth-century boulevard and contemporary commercial skyline.
The full story
Chapultepec has served as a strategic and symbolic landscape since pre-Hispanic times. Its hill later held a viceregal retreat, an imperial residence and a presidential home before the castle became the National History Museum. At ground level, the park now concentrates major cultural institutions, including the National Museum of Anthropology, as well as recreation and the city zoo. Paseo de la Reforma extends that ceremonial geography eastward. Created under Emperor Maximilian and reshaped by later governments, the avenue became a setting for monuments, offices and public processions. The Angel of Independence anchors its best-known roundabout, while Zona Rosa and newer towers reveal changing patterns of leisure and business. Following the corridor shows how Mexico City joined landscape, national memory and urban expansion in one long axis rather than confining them to a single historic district.
