Cabo Pulmo: reef structure and conservation
Cabo Pulmo protects a coral reef on Baja California’s eastern coast. Its parallel bands of hard coral explain the underwater landscape, while conservation gives that landscape a wider story.
At Bahía Pulmo, hard coral grows on rocky outcrops running parallel to the shore, with successive bands in deeper water offshore. Protection followed heavy fishing pressure, and local conservation work became part of the reef’s story. This gives Cabo Pulmo a distinct ecological identity beyond the broader resort region around Cabo San Lucas.
What to look for
Hard-coral bands follow rocky outcrops parallel to the coast.
The protected area lies between Pulmo Point and Los Frailes Cape.
