Tenochtitlan beneath central Mexico City
Tenochtitlan gives central Mexico City an earlier geography: an island capital in Lake Texcoco. Its history explains why ancient remains and later centers of power share the downtown landscape.
Thinking of the historic center as a former island changes how you understand the city around you. Tenochtitlan became the Mexica imperial capital in the fifteenth century before its capture in 1521. Its remains belong to the same urban landscape that subsequently developed under Spanish colonial rule; neighboring Tlatelolco was a separate city-state.
