The mountain forests of Constitución de 1857
Constitución de 1857 reveals a forested side of northern Baja California. Pine-covered mountains and the seasonally changing waters of the Hansen Plain contrast with lower desert and chaparral.
The Sierra de Juárez supports conifer forests around a high plain of granite and sand. Hansen Lake sits at the center of the protected landscape, while other shallow basins hold water only part of the year. Winter precipitation and summer evaporation help explain why a lake scene here can change greatly between seasons.
What to look for
Hansen Lake is also known as Juárez Lake.
Conifer forests give way to chaparral and desert shrub at lower elevations.
Useful to know
Do not plan around every basin containing water: several lakes on the Hansen Plain are seasonal.
