From the Mexico World / Areas
Toluca
Toluca pairs a walk around Los Portales with the wider history of the Matlatzinco Valley. Calixtlahuaca and Nevado de Toluca are separate regional outings rather than central-city stops.
Los Portales and the adjoining Plaza de Fray Andrés de Castro give the city visit a clear focus, combining arcades, a surviving monastery space and regional foods. Beyond the center, Calixtlahuaca connects the valley with its pre-Hispanic past. Decide between a compact urban visit and a wider excursion before adding the volcano as well.
What to look for
Plaza de Fray Andrés de Castro connects with Los Portales through a covered passage.
The former monastery sacristy survives beside the plaza.
Useful to know
Combine Los Portales with Plaza de Fray Andrés de Castro for a focused central walk.
Plan Calixtlahuaca and Nevado de Toluca with separate transport and time beyond the city center.
