Tulum as a walled Maya port
Tulum’s Caribbean cliffs were the setting of a working Maya port. Its walls and coastal position make more sense when read as parts of a late Maya city.
Tulum served as a port connected with Cobá and reached its height between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. That history gives the cliffside setting a purpose beyond the sea view. It also places Tulum later than many better-known Maya cities, extending the story into the period of Spanish arrival.
