Why go
Knowing who built a city changes how you compare its monuments. Teotihuacan’s influence extended far beyond Central Mexico, while Zapotec Monte Albán and Maya Calakmul developed in other settings. This background helps you select sites for their differences instead of treating every pyramid as an Aztec monument.
The full story
Agriculture helped transform early settlements into larger communities with specialized crafts and ceremonial centers. Maize, beans and tomatoes were among the crops domesticated in Mexico. The Olmec flourished on the Gulf Coast from around 1500 BCE, and their artistic and religious traditions spread into other regions. Maya and Zapotec centers developed at Calakmul and Monte Albán. Writing also took different regional forms, including Zapotec systems and the later elaborate Maya hieroglyphic tradition. In Central Mexico, Teotihuacan became a major political and commercial power whose influence reached the Maya area. Its decline opened space for competing centers such as Xochicalco and Cholula. Much later, the Mexica established their dominance through the Aztec Triple Alliance. Tribute mattered more than uniform local administration: conquered rulers could retain their positions while meeting the empire’s demands. The Aztec world was one late chapter in a much longer history.
