South Beach
Miami Beach's southern district combines a wide Atlantic beach, concentrated Art Deco architecture and late-night energy, with crowds and heat as the main trade-offs.
Why go
South Beach is where Miami's beach image and urban history overlap most clearly. The pastel hotels of the historic district sit only blocks from open sand, while Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road offer very different kinds of public life. A rewarding visit separates daylight architecture and beach time from the louder evening scene instead of compressing everything into one pass.
What to look for
A dense collection of 1930s and 1940s Art Deco hotels
The immediate transition from city blocks to broad Atlantic sand
Different rhythms on Ocean Drive, Washington Avenue and Lincoln Road
Useful to know
Walk the historic district earlier, then decide whether to return after dark for the nightlife atmosphere.
Expect little shade near the beach and build in an indoor or seated break.
