The Barnacle Historic State Park

A preserved 1891 bayfront home in Coconut Grove, surrounded by hammock vegetation and offering an intimate view of pioneer-era coastal life.

The Barnacle Historic State Park

Why go

The Barnacle narrows Miami history to one household and landscape. Boat designer Ralph Munroe built the house when Biscayne Bay was the main route through the area, and the approach through tropical hardwood hammock helps separate it from modern Coconut Grove. The home's raised form, porches and relationship to the water make climate-responsive design easy to see.

What to look for

  • The 1891 house set within tropical hardwood hammock
  • Wide porches and raised construction adapted to coastal weather
  • A lawn descending toward Biscayne Bay

Useful to know

  • Check current house-tour availability; the grounds and interior may follow different access rules.
  • Pair the park with a Coconut Grove walk and allow for the shaded approach from Main Highway.
