Why go
This theater carries two architectural periods in one visit. Its original Beaux-Arts complex was reduced to a two-story building with an Art Moderne face, while the interior kept a more elaborate character. That contrast is easiest to appreciate at a ticketed performance. The Pantages also sits among the surviving downtown theaters now programmed by Hennepin Arts, making it a useful stop in a Hennepin Avenue theater walk.
What to look for
- The low Art Moderne facade differs from the building's Beaux-Arts origins.
- An ornate interior survives behind the later street frontage.
Useful to know
- Use a scheduled show for interior access; the frontage can be seen on a downtown walk.
- Compare the facade with the nearby Orpheum and other Hennepin Avenue theaters.
