Why go
Unlike Mia’s broad historical sweep, the Walker concentrates on more recent art and work across several media. Its buildings and the Sculpture Garden offer a useful indoor-outdoor contrast, while the current exhibition or performance program determines what you will actually encounter.
What to look for
- The 1971 Edward Larrabee Barnes wing and 2005 Herzog & de Meuron expansion have different forms.
- The center brings visual art together with performance and film.
- The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden sits across the street as a separate outdoor visit.
The full story
Thomas Barlow Walker first opened part of his private art collection to the public in 1879. The institution moved to its present area in 1927 and later developed from a gallery into a center for contemporary art. That change matters on a visit: the Walker’s identity lies as much in exhibitions, performances and film as in a fixed collection. Its 1971 building was designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes; Herzog & de Meuron designed the 2005 expansion. Reading the two parts side by side shows how the institution’s architectural ambitions changed with its program. The adjacent Minneapolis Sculpture Garden opened through a collaboration with the city’s park board, extending the art experience into public outdoor space. Because gallery installations and events change, the durable reason to go is the Walker’s approach to recent art, while the exact works on view deserve a check before arrival.
Useful to know
- Check the current program before making a special trip for a show or performance.
