GUM and Belarusian craft shopping
Shopping in Minsk can combine an interest in Belarusian textiles and crafts with a look at GUM, a 1950s department-store building on Independence Avenue.
GUM’s Socialist Realist architecture gives shopping a place in the story of postwar Minsk. Linen, wool, embroidery, straw work and wooden boxes offer a different focus from international brands, with materials and making techniques providing a useful way to compare possible purchases.
Useful to know
At GUM or a souvenir shop, check labels for fibre composition and country of manufacture before choosing Belarusian textiles.
