History of the Monaco Grand Prix

Monaco’s race began before the Formula One World Championship. Its 1929 street course established a lasting link between the Automobile Club de Monaco and the principality’s roads.

Why go

The race’s origins explain why the circuit belongs so visibly to the city. Antony Noghès proposed a competition held wholly within Monaco after the club’s rally, which used roads elsewhere, did not meet the international body’s test for a national event.

The full story

The Automobile Club de Monaco had organised the Monte Carlo Rally from 1911, but that event crossed other countries. When the club sought full national standing in international motorsport, a race entirely inside Monaco offered a clearer case. Antony Noghès advanced the street-race idea with the support of Prince Louis II and driver Louis Chiron. The inaugural Grand Prix took place in 1929; William Grover-Williams, racing as “Williams,” won in a Bugatti. Monaco appeared in the first Formula One World Championship season in 1950. Later decades gave the circuit some of its best-known stories: Graham Hill won five Monaco races in the 1960s, and Ayrton Senna won six, including five in succession from 1989 to 1993. These names are most meaningful beside the course itself, where steep streets and close barriers make the achievements easier to picture. The race has evolved, but its city-street setting remains the thread connecting the eras.
