Languages in Monaco
French is Monaco's official language. Italian and English are also heard, while Monégasque remains a traditional local language visible on bilingual street signs in Monaco-Ville.
This explains what you will see as you move through the old town. French is the reliable starting point for signs and everyday exchanges; the French–Monégasque street names on the Rock point to a local identity distinct from the surrounding French coast. Do not assume every notice will appear in English.
Useful to know
Use French place names when reading signs or asking for directions, especially in Monaco-Ville.
Look for French–Monégasque street signs on the Rock if you want to notice the traditional language in public space.
