From the Monaco World / Stories

Monaco's geography

Monaco occupies a narrow, built-up stretch between the Mediterranean and France. The steep ground explains why the Rock, harbor, Monte Carlo and hillside gardens can feel farther apart than they look.

Monaco's geography

Why go

Use the terrain to choose a sensible order for sightseeing. The Rock rises above Port Hercule, Monte Carlo lies across the harbor, and the Jardin Exotique sits high on the inland side. Fontvieille and its harbor show how Monaco has also extended its usable space into the sea.

Useful to know

  • Group stops by elevation as well as distance; a harbor-to-hillside walk involves a real climb.
  • Compare the view from the Rock with the higher Jardin Exotique side to understand the narrow coast and reclaimed areas.
