Why go
The name gives Port Hercule and the Rock a longer story than their present appearance suggests. Comparing the ancient harbour reference with the modern port is more useful than taking the legend of Hercules or a proposed Greek translation as settled fact.
The full story
Greek and Roman accounts associated this stretch of coast with Monoïkos and Hercules. The Latin name Portus Herculis Monoeci preserved that connection, which survives visibly in the modern name Port Hercule. Ancient authors described a Ligurian place here, while later traditions imagined a temple to Hercules. The harbour and headland make the location plausible as a landmark for sailors, but the stories do not fix the precise origin of the word. One familiar explanation divides the Greek-looking name into words meaning “single” and “house.” Another links it to Hercules as a solitary figure or to a single sanctuary. A different interpretation treats it as a local Ligurian name adapted into Greek. These are competing hypotheses, not a single agreed history. The useful point on a visit is the continuity of place: the port below the Rock remains the geographic reference around which several ancient names and stories gathered.
