Why go
The longyi is worn by men and women, although its styling differs, and it remains a useful detail to notice in everyday dress. Burmese speech also uses forms of address that reflect age and relationship. A simple greeting such as mingalaba is more useful to a visitor than trying to master those distinctions from a short list.
The full story
A longyi is a length of cloth worn around the lower body by both men and women in Myanmar. Its styles and combinations with shirts or jackets vary, and trousers and skirts are also common in cities. Clothing can carry history as well as practicality: during British rule, some nationalists used traditional dress as a quiet expression of resistance. Language has its own social signals. Burmese forms of address can mark the age or standing of the person being addressed; Ko, Maung and U are among the forms found in everyday speech. Their use depends on context, so copying one without knowing a person's preference can be awkward. Mingalaba is a familiar greeting and a simpler starting point. Respect for elders appears in social teaching and in customs around serving food, though families and communities differ. Notice how people address one another and dress for a setting rather than assuming one rule describes everyone in the country.
