Why go
This border and coastal setting differs markedly from the temple plain and Irrawaddy cities farther north. The town, once called Victoria Point, grew as settlement and administration shifted south from Maliwan during British rule. Its geography is the main planning reason to consider it: Kawthaung connects the peninsula, the river border and offshore waters in one place. The monsoon can strongly affect outdoor plans.
What to look for
- The river separates Kawthaung from Ranong in Thailand.
- The Andaman Sea opens west and southwest of the town.
Useful to know
- Check current border, sea transport and weather conditions before committing to a coastal route.
