Mandalay
Mandalay, on the east bank of the Irrawaddy, is Myanmar's last royal capital and a useful base for understanding the history of Upper Myanmar.
Why go
The city's royal past distinguishes it from Yangon and Naypyidaw. Its position on the Irrawaddy also helps orient a wider journey through Upper Myanmar, including Bagan and the hill town of Pyin U Lwin. Mandalay's cultural importance is grounded in this royal and regional history rather than in a single monument. Use it as a place to connect the former capital with the surrounding landscape and towns.
Useful to know
Allow separate time for Mandalay and any trip toward Pyin U Lwin or Bagan; they are distinct destinations.
