Mawlamyine
Mawlamyine sits near the mouth of the Thanlwin River in Mon State, combining a former colonial capital's history with pagoda hills and an estuary setting.
The city served as the first capital of British Burma after the First Anglo Burmese War. Its Mon heritage, later colonial institutions and river trade make it a useful place to read several periods together. Kyaikthanlan Pagoda stands on a ridge above the city; the view links its religious setting with the Thanlwin and the low hills around the estuary. Mawlamyine rewards time beyond a transit stop.
What to look for
Kyaikthanlan Pagoda stands on a ridge overlooking Mawlamyine.
The Thanlwin reaches the Gulf of Martaban near the city.
Useful to know
Pair the ridge view with time near the river to understand the city's geography.
