From the Myanmar World / Areas

Myanmar: temples, cities and highlands

Myanmar stretches from the Shan Hills to the Andaman Sea, linking temple plains, river cities, highland towns and coastal settlements across a large and varied country.

Myanmar: temples, cities and highlands

Why go

Bagan's temple plain, Yangon's religious landmarks and colonial streets, and Inle Lake's highland waters offer very different ways to understand Myanmar. Mandalay adds the history of the last royal capital, while Mawlamyine and Kengtung point toward distinct Mon and Shan histories. Distances are substantial, so plan around a few regions rather than treating the country as one short circuit.

What to look for

  • Bagan's surviving temples spread across the Irrawaddy plain.
  • Yangon pairs Shwedagon Pagoda with streets shaped by the colonial period.
  • Inle Lake occupies a highland basin in Shan State.

Useful to know

  • Check current travel advice and local access conditions before choosing regions or overland routes.
