Taunggyi is Shan State's highland capital, set beside a prominent ridge and linked historically with the communities and routes of the Shan Plateau.

Why go

The city's name refers to the large mountain or ridge to its east. British administrators moved their regional offices here from the eastern side of Inle Lake in the late 19th century, helping turn a small settlement into a center for the Southern Shan States. That setting gives Taunggyi a different role from nearby Inle Lake: it is an urban highland center with its own layered Pa O, Intha, Shan and other histories.

What to look for

  • A ridge east of the city gives Taunggyi its name.
  • The city's history connects it with the wider Shan Plateau and Inle Lake region.

Useful to know

  • Check current road conditions before combining Taunggyi with the Inle Lake area.
