Yangon
Yangon brings together Shwedagon Pagoda and a substantial colonial era city center, making it a strong starting point for Myanmar's religious and urban history.
The former national capital remains distinct from Naypyidaw's planned administrative landscape. In central Yangon, streets and buildings reflect the British colonial period, while Shwedagon is an active Buddhist landmark with a much longer story. Give both settings time: the contrast helps explain why Yangon matters beyond its former capital status. The city also provides a base for considering nearby Bago or Twante.
What to look for
Shwedagon Pagoda rises above the city as a major Buddhist pilgrimage site.
Colonial era buildings remain part of central Yangon's streetscape.
Useful to know
Treat the pagoda and the colonial center as separate parts of a city visit.
