Naples, the gulf and the volcanoes
Naples climbs from the Gulf of Naples toward inland hills, with Vesuvius to one side and the Campi Flegrei volcanic area to the other. That terrain shapes both views and travel time.
Understanding the setting helps you choose outings. The old centre, waterfront and hill districts belong to the city; Pompeii and Herculaneum lie outside it, while Capri, Ischia and Procida require a crossing of the gulf. A map can make these look closer than the journey feels.
Useful to know
Keep city walks and archaeological excursions on separate parts of the trip.
Allow extra time for climbs between the shore and Naples's higher neighbourhoods.
Check current ferry and rail options before planning an island or Vesuvius-area day.
