Why go
The castle's position explains why Megaride mattered long before the present fortifications. Its medieval name also carries the legend of Virgil's hidden egg, supposedly protecting Naples as long as it remained unbroken. From the shore, the compact fortress reads against the open Gulf of Naples.
What to look for
- The fortress on Megaride, linked to the shore by a causeway
- The small waterfront settlement of Borgo Marinari beside the walls
- The castle silhouette against the Gulf of Naples
Useful to know
- Enjoy the waterfront and Borgo Marinari even if the castle interior cannot be visited.
- Check the city's current access notice before planning to enter the fortress.
