The crater puts the eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum into a physical landscape. From permitted overlooks you can examine the crater and fumaroles, then turn outward to the gulf, Mount Somma and the surrounding towns. It is a walking visit on an exposed volcanic slope rather than a viewpoint reached at the summit by vehicle.
What to look for
The crater interior and fumaroles from permitted viewpoints
Mount Somma and the Valle del Gigante along the approach
Views toward the Gulf of Naples, Sorrento and Capri from the rim
Useful to know
Plan transport to the Gran Cono trailhead at quota 1000, not to the summit coordinate.
Check the park's same-day trail notices before setting out; weather alerts can stop access.
Allow roughly two hours for the shorter managed route, with more time for the longer option.
