Take in the whole
Stand far enough back to see the frame and the picture together. Notice where your eye goes first and which parts receive less attention. The brightest area may be small. A large shape may organise the scene before you have identified what it represents. Try describing the arrangement in plain words.
Stay with one detail
In The Arnolfini Portrait, the mirror can lead you into the depth of the room. In Sunflowers, several yellows and different thicknesses of paint give you something to compare. Let one observation become more precise. What looks like a single patch of colour from a distance may contain several kinds of mark.
Change position with care
Step back or move slightly to one side, leaving space for other visitors. Holbein’s The Ambassadors contains a stretched shape that resolves as a skull from an oblique view. Most paintings do not require that particular trick, but a change of distance can still reveal how their forms hold together. Never cross a barrier or lean towards the surface.
Bring in the story
Now read the title and a little of the explanation. The information may identify a person, explain a religious event or tell you what the picture was made for. Return to the detail you chose and see whether that knowledge changes it. You can leave with a clear observation and a new question, even if the whole painting remains unfamiliar.
