Look at the Gallery from the public side of Trafalgar Square. Compare the purpose of the national collection, Wilkins’s portico and the Sainsbury Wing’s changing welcome.

Three outdoor observations follow the building’s public face from the square to the Sainsbury Wing. The visit stays on public pedestrian space and does not require entry to the galleries or a controlled courtyard.
Allow 25–40 minutes for the three observations. You can finish on the public forecourt outside the Sainsbury Wing, or use its main entrance for a separate visit to the collection.
