The columned front of the Gallery is an obvious landmark from Trafalgar Square. William Wilkins gave the building a classical public face when it opened here in 1838. The steps and columns still define many visitors’ first view of the museum. The Portico is used as an exit. To enter the collection, continue towards the Sainsbury Wing at the western end of the building. Its main entrance is step-free. If you are looking at the architecture from outside, stay in the public pedestrian area and allow people leaving the Gallery room to pass.
