Carlo Crivelli’s The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius rewards a close look at architecture and objects. Hard stone, elaborate decoration and small everyday things can appear insistently tangible. Crivelli trained in the Venetian region before working in the Marche, in central Italy.
Other painters sent works from Venice to churches and homes on the mainland. Cima da Conegliano often gave his figures simpler architectural surroundings and a distant landscape. Compare the feeling of space in these approaches. The room follows painting beyond one city, through commissions, travelling artists and pictures made for places far from the workshops that produced them.
