Look up at the large circle above the stair. Richard Long made Mud Sun in 2025 using mud from the River Avon on a prepared surface. Its scale changes as you climb towards the collection, bringing a contemporary work into the approach to much older paintings.
The stair leads from the foyer on Level 0 to the main-gallery landing on Level 2. The landing connects with Room 51, where the early-painting galleries begin. Follow the room numbers and signs for the Renaissance rooms in the main building. Use the lift for a separate step-free connection between floors. Keep moving areas clear if you pause to look back at the stair.
