A little creature blows a shell beside Mars’s ear. He sleeps through it. Another struggles with a helmet, while the god’s armour becomes a set of toys. Venus, the goddess of love, remains composed at the other end of the picture. Sandro Botticelli, a Florentine painter, shows the god of war defeated by sleep after an encounter with his lover. The small satyrs, creatures with both human and goat features, make the imbalance amusing. Their busy play surrounds a man who cannot even lift a finger. The long, low shape suggests the painting was made to fit into a furnished room, probably in connection with a marriage. Educated patrons in Renaissance Florence enjoyed subjects from ancient mythology. A picture like this could combine beautiful bodies, learned references and a joke about the power of love. Follow the figures across the narrow space. Venus’s upright alertness balances Mars’s loose limbs, while the satyrs connect them through stolen weapons. Botticelli gives the private encounter the measured arrangement of a formal display.
