Climate and seasons in Nepal

Plan Nepal by elevation as well as season. Warm lowlands, cooler hills and much colder high mountains can call for different clothing and route choices on the same trip.

Why go

The Terai and the Himalayan heights do not share one useful weather forecast. Summer monsoon rain can also affect exposed routes, while mountain conditions change sharply with height. A region-specific forecast is more useful than a countrywide seasonal label. It also shapes what to carry.

The full story

Nepal’s steep rise from the Terai to the Himalaya creates many local climates. Low plains are generally warmer, while the middle hills vary with height and the shape of their valleys. Higher mountain country becomes colder still. A day in Kathmandu therefore tells you little about conditions on a much higher route. Even nearby slopes can feel different when they face the weather differently or hold cold air. Season adds another layer. Moist summer monsoon air brings sustained rain to much of the country, but the onset and local effects vary. Heavy rain can affect roads and trails, and the mountain ranges also create drier areas in their rain shadow. Avoid treating a single monthly average as a promise for a particular journey. Compare the forecast and current route information for the places on your own itinerary, then pack for the highest and most exposed part rather than for the first stop.

Useful to know

  • Check forecasts for each overnight elevation, especially when moving from a valley into mountain terrain.
  • During the monsoon period, check current rain, route and trail conditions before setting out.
