Nepal at a glance
Start with Nepal’s north–south contrast: fertile southern plains give way to settled hills and the high Himalaya. Kathmandu is a useful cultural anchor, but it represents only one part of the country.
This overview helps you decide between a valley visit centered on historic cities, a journey through the Terai, and travel into mountain country. Nepal’s geography changes the pace and preparation of each choice more than a single countrywide itinerary suggests.
What to look for
The Kathmandu Valley holds Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur.
The southern Terai is low and humid; the northern Himalaya includes Sagarmatha.
