Why go
The shared terminal simplifies orientation: downtown is close, while the French Quarter and Uptown require a short local transfer. Train routes can be scenic but vulnerable to long-distance delays, so avoid placing a fixed activity immediately after arrival. Confirm the operator, platform and current timetable before travel.
The full story
New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal serves Amtrak trains and intercity buses on Loyola Avenue near the Central Business District. Amtrak’s City of New Orleans links Chicago with the city, the Crescent connects toward Atlanta, Washington and New York, and the Sunset Limited runs west toward Los Angeles. Long-distance rail schedules can change and delays accumulate across multi-state routes, so use the current Amtrak timetable rather than an old city guide. Bus carriers and boarding procedures also change over time. From the terminal, taxis, rideshare and local transit continue toward the French Quarter, Garden District and other neighborhoods. The downtown location makes a car unnecessary for many arrivals, but walking with luggage can become uncomfortable in heat, rain or on rough sidewalks. Keep the first fixed activity flexible and verify late-night onward transport in advance.
