Garden District

The Garden District is an open-air architecture walk of 19th-century houses, live oaks and ironwork, with the best experience found on quiet residential blocks.

Garden District

Why go

Walk here to compare Greek Revival, Italianate and later Victorian houses set behind gardens and fences. Deeper setbacks and separate lots distinguish the area from the French Quarter’s dense courtyards and party walls. The neighborhood rewards slow observation, but private homes and closed cemetery gates require respectful boundaries.

What to look for

  • Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian houses
  • Cast-iron fences, deep gardens and live-oak canopies
  • The contrast with the French Quarter’s denser urban form

Useful to know

  • Use a mapped loop between St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street rather than wandering without boundaries.
  • View houses from public sidewalks and avoid blocking entrances or photographing into private interiors.
  • Check Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 access separately; neighborhood entry does not include the cemetery.
