From the New York World / Areas

Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a borough of distinct neighborhoods, not one sightseeing stop. Start with a focused waterfront or park-area visit rather than trying to cover its full extent in a day.

Brooklyn

Why go

DUMBO offers bridge views and reused industrial buildings, while Fort Greene Park provides a different neighborhood anchor beside Brooklyn Technical High School. Those contrasting settings make a selected Brooklyn outing worthwhile: the borough’s identity emerges from particular streets and communities, rather than a single downtown image or an itinerary built around its name alone.

What to look for

  • DUMBO’s waterfront blocks sit between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
  • Fort Greene Park faces the substantial Brooklyn Technical High School building.
  • Converted warehouse buildings give the waterfront a different scale from residential neighborhoods.

The full story

Brooklyn was an independent city before it joined Greater New York in 1898. Its European settlement began with the Dutch town of Breuckelen on the Long Island side of the East River, on land inhabited by the Lenape. The later city expanded well beyond that early waterfront settlement, which helps explain why the modern borough contains so many different neighborhood identities. The two suggested anchors show different parts of that development. DUMBO retains a ferry-and-manufacturing landscape through its bridge infrastructure, Belgian-block streets and warehouse buildings. Fort Greene’s park and the large Brooklyn Technical High School building express a more residential and civic setting. The school opened in 1922, with its present building constructed in the following decade. These places offer useful starting points for understanding Brooklyn without treating its many communities as interchangeable or expecting one short visit to represent them all.

Useful to know

  • Choose a neighborhood focus: DUMBO for a waterfront walk or Fort Greene for a park-centered outing.
  • Plan travel between separate Brooklyn neighborhoods instead of assuming the borough is one walkable attraction.
